  • Nana (Owc) * 2009

    Nana (Owc) * 2009

    Zola, Emile
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
Nana opens in 1867, the year of the World Fair, when Paris, thronged by a cosmopolitan elite, was la Ville Lumiere, a perfect victim for Zola's scathing denunciation of hypocrisy and fin-de-siecle moral corruption. The fate of Nana, the Helen of Troy ofthe Second Empire, and daughter of the laundress in L'Assommoir, reduced Flaubert to almost inarticulate gasps of admiration: 'Chapter 14, unsurpassable! ...Yes! ...Christ Almighty! ...Incomparable ...Straight out of Babylon!' Boulevard society ispresented with painstaking attention to detail, and Zola's documentation of the contemporary theatrical scene comes directly from his own experience - it was his own failure as a playwright which sent him back to novel-writing and Nana itself. This newtranslation is an accurate and stylish rendering of Zola's original, which was first published in 1880.

All's Well, That Ends Well (Owc) * 2008

    Shakespeare, William
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
Usually classifed as a 'problem comedy', All's Well that Ends Well invites a fresh assessment. Its psychologically disturbing presentation of an agressive, designing woman and a reluctant husband wooed by trickery won it little favour in earliercenturies, and both directors and critics have frequently tried to avoid or simplify its uncomfortable elements. More recently, several distinguished productions have revealed it as an exceptionally penetrating study of both personal and social issues. In her introduction Susan Snyder makes the play's clashing ideologies of class and gender newly accessible. She explains how the very discords of style can be seen as a source of theatrical power and complexity, and offers a fully reconsidered, helpfullyannotated text for both readers and actors.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Antigone, Oedipus The King, Electra (Owc) * 2008

    Sophocles
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
Translated by H. D. F. KittoEdited with an introduction and notes by Edith HallLove and loyalty, hatred and revenge, fear, deprivation, and political ambition: these are the motives which thrust the characters portrayed in these three Sophoclean masterpieces on to their collision course with catastrophe.Recognized in his own day as perhaps the greatest of the Greek tragedians, Sophocles' reputation has remained undimmed for two and a half thousand years. His greatest innovation in the tragic medium was his development of a central tragic figure, facedwith a test of will and character, risking obloquy and death rather than compromise his or her principles: it is striking that Antigone and Electra both have a woman as their intransigent 'hero'. Antigone dies rather neglect her duty to her family,Oedipus' determination to save his city results in the horrific discovery that he has committed both incest and parricide, and Electra's unremitting anger at her mother and her lover keeps her in servitude and despair. These vivid translations combine elegance and modernity, and are remarkable for their lucidity and accuracy. Their sonorous diction, economy, and sensitivity to the varied metres and modes of the original musical delivery make them equally suitable forreading or theatrical peformance.

*Attractive new setting using English first edition text for this outsanding edition by acclaimed Conrad scholar Cedric Watts*Features new chronology and bibliography*A unique combination of Conrad's stories*Includes glossary of nautical terms, and a map of the Congo riverHEART OF DARKNESS * AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS * KARAIN * YOUTHThe finest of all Conrad's tales, 'Heart of Darkness' is set in an atmosphere of mystery and menace, and tells of Marlow's perilous journey up the Congo River to relieve his employer's agent, the renowned and formidable Mr Kurtz. What he sees on hisjourney, and his eventual encounter with Kurtz, horrify and perplex him, and call into question the very bases of civilization and human nature. Endlessly reinterpreted by critics and adapted for film, radio, and television, the story shows Conrad at hismost intense and sophisticated. The other three tales in this volume depict corruption and obsession, and question racial assumptions. Set in the exotic surroundings of Africa, Malaysia. and the east, they variously appraise the glamour, folly, and rapacity of imperial adventure. Thisrevised edition uses the English first edition texts and has a new chronology and bibliography.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Sherlock Holmes - Selected Stories (Owc) 2Nd Ed.

    Conan Doyle,A.
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
'Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science' For more than a century the Holmes stories have held a strange, almost inexplicable grip on the popular imagination. They are intimately associated with late Victorian and Edwardian society, yet curiouslytimeless in their appeal. The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, together with their housekeeper Mrs Hudson and their address at 221B Baker Street are as familiar today as when they made their first appearance in the late 1880s. The storieshave been endlessly interpreted, adapted, and modernized, but still it is to Arthur Conan Doyle's originals that we return. This new selection of some of the best of them is designed to give readers a full sense of their world: the brooding fog ofLondon, ruined heirs in creaking mansions, and hidden crimes in the farthest-flung corners of the British Empire. The stories take Holmes's career from its early days to its close, and include the book-length Sign of the Four. Barry McCrea's introductioninvestigates the currents that lie beneath their surface.

  • Lady Anna (Owc) *

    Lady Anna (Owc) *

    Trollope, Anthony
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
When it appeared in 1874, Lady Anna met with little success, and positively outraged the conservative - `This is the sort of thing the reading public will never stand...a man must be embittered bysome violent present exasperation who can like such disruptions of social order as this.' (Saturday Review) - although Trollope himself considered it `the best novel I ever wrote! Very much! Quite far away above all others!!!'This tightly constructed and passionate study of enforced marriage in the world of Radical politics and social inequality, records the lifelong attempt of Countess Lovel to justify her claim to her title, and her daughter Anna's legitimacy, after herhusband announces that he already has a wife. However, mother and daughter are driven apart when Anna defies her mother's wish that she marry her cousin, heir to her father's title, and falls in love with journeyman tailor and young Radical DanielThwaite. The outcome is never in doubt, but Trollope's ambivalence on the question is profound, and the novel both intense and powerful.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. *Jeri Johnson's edition of Ulysses is acknowledged by reviewers, Anthony Burgess among them, as the best available*The intro is the most wide-ranging, comprehensive, and accessible intro to the collection, its history and its reception in both literary/media world, and Ireland.*The notes are the fullest of any edition, giving historical, personal, cultural and literary references and details.*Includes the original version of 'The Sisters' and Joyce's correspondence concerning censorship which he wanted printed as the book's preface.'I regret to see that my book has turned out un fiasco solenne'James Joyce's disillusion with the publication of Dubliners in 1914 was the result of ten years battling with publishers, resisting their demands to remove swear words, real place names and much else, including two entire stories. Although only 24 whenhe signed his first publishing contract for the book, Joyce already knew its worth: to alter it in any way would 'retard the course of civilisation in Ireland'.Joyce's aim was to tell the truth - to create a work of art that would reflect life in Ireland at the turn of the last century and by rejecting euphemism, reveal to the Irish the unromantic reality the recognition of which would lead to the spiritualliberation of the country. Each of the fifteen stories offers a glimpse of the lives of ordinary Dubliners - a death, an encounter, an opportunity not taken, a memory rekindled - and collectively they paint a portrait of a nation.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. 'Love is nothing without feeling. And feeling is still less without love.'Celebrated in its own day as the progenitor of 'a school of sentimental writers', A Sentimental Journey (1768) has outlasted its many imitators because of the humour and mischievous eroticism that inform Mr Yorick's travels. Setting out to journey toFrance and Italy he gets little further than Lyons but finds much to appreciate, in contrast to contemporary travel writers whom Sterne satirizes in the figures of Smelfungus and Mundungus. A master of ambiguity and double entendre, Sterne isnevertheless as concerned as his peers with exploring the nature of virtue

The very first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet was also the first of Conan Doyle's books to be published. His two creations, Holmes, the master of the science of detection and Watson, the great detective's faithful companion, are immediately infine form. The mystery itself, its solution plucked unerringly by Holmes from the heart of Victorian London, proves to be the inevitable consequence of a tragedy of the American West. The story is harrowing in its alternating hope and despair, althoughHolmes himself was later to complain that the book `produces much the same effect as if you worked a love-story or an elopement into the fifth proposition of Euclid'.

James was an eminent scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic surroundings of Eton and Cambridge. His classic supernatural tales draw on the terrors of the everyday, inwhich documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and night-time settings where imagination runs riot. Lonely country houses, remote inns, ancient churches or the manuscript collections of great libraries provide settings forunbearable menace, from creatures seeking retribution and harm. Rome's Italian Wars (Owc) Books 6-10

    Livy
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
    - A new translation of Books 6 to 10 of Livy's monumental history of Rome, in which Rome recovers from its Gallic disaster to impose mastery over almost the entire Italian peninsula.- The most up-to-date edition drawing on the latest scholarship to illuminate this unique document in Roman literature and history.- John Yardley's translation gives a vivid sense of the energy, variety, and literary skill of Livy's great work.- Dexter Hoyos's introduction sets Livy in the context of Roman historiography and discusses the sources that he used and their strengths and limitations. It deftly sets out the structure of the work and explains why the fourth century BC was so criticalan era for the rise of Rome.- Comprehensive notes clarify problems of historical content, topography, and chronology.- Detailed glossary explains Roman technical terms.- Appendix analyses Livy's invaluable, but in places flawed, description of how the Roman legion of the time was organized.- Two maps clarify the regions and peoples of Italy mentioned in the text.'People have it in their minds that he would have been a match for Alexander, had Alexander turned his arms on Europe.'So Livy characterizes Papirius Cursor, one of Rome's famous generals in the fourth century BC. In Books 6 to 10 of his monumental history of Rome, Livy deals with the period in which Rome recovered from its Gallic disaster to impose mastery over almostthe entire Italian peninsula in a series of ever greater wars. Along with Papirius, Livy paints vivid portraits of other notable figures, such as Camillus, who rescued the city from its Gallic captors in 390, young Manlius Torquatus, victor in aDavid-versus-Goliath duel with a Gallic chieftain, and Appius Claudius who built Rome's first major highway, the Appian Way. Livy's blend of factual narrative and imaginative recreation brings to life a critical era for the rise of Rome, and Books 6 to10 of his work are the one complete account we have, as the city passes from myth and legend into the increasing light of reliable history.John Yardley's fluent translation is accompanied by an introduction and notes that set Livy in the context of Roman historiography. The complete Livy in English, available in five volumes from Oxford World's Classics.

But as the captivated Gilbert Markham will discover, it is not the story circulating among local gossips. Living under an assumed name, 'Helen Graham' is the estranged wife of a dissoluterake, desperate to protect her son from his destructive influence. Her diary entries reveal the shocking world of debauchery and cruelty from which she has fled. Combining a sensational story of a man's physical and moral decline through alcohol, a studyof marital breakdown, a disquisition on the care and upbringing of children, and a hard-hitting critique of the position of women in Victorian society, this passionate tale of betrayal is set within a stern moral framework tempered by Anne Bront‰'soptimistic belief in universal redemption. Drawing on her first-hand experiences with her brother Branwell, Bront‰'s novel scandalized contemporary readers. It still retains its power to shock.

The Wings of The Dove (Owc) *

    James, Henry
    Kiadó: Oxford University Press
Set in turn-of-the-century London, Henry James' The Wings of the Dove tells the story of Mildred Milly Theale, an orphaned American heiress, and the mixed motives of those around her, namely Kate Croy. Kate is a scheming young woman in love with MertonDensher, a man too poor to offer her a fashionable marriage. Thus, she conspires to push Merton towards Milly, who has an unnamed fatal illness, with the hope of eventually enhancing her lover's financial status. Like much of James' earlier works, TheWings of the Dove involves the universal themes of selfishness, greed, conspiracy, love, and betrayal. It also addresses the Victorian tradition and pitches American innocence against European cunning. However, the novel, written later in the author'slife, deals with deeper psychological aspects than his earlier works. While it does include social commentary, the central conflict of the novel regards moral character as opposed to cultural background. There have been many adaptations of The Wings ofthe Dove.
